Located in the George Washington National Forest, these are the tallest set of waterfalls east of the Mississippi River. At an elevation of 1,670′, with a height frequently listed as 1,214′ (topographical maps show the height as closer to 1,000′), there are five drops.
Thought to have been named for settler William Crabtree, who settled the area in 1777, the area was nearly developed into a resort in the mid-20th century. Former U.S. Assistant Fuel Administrator during WWI, environmentalist and Nelson County native son L. A. Snead led negotiations to secure the falls and surrounding area to prevent development. In 1968, following personal and Congressional investment, the lands were incorporated into the National Forest System.
Although the 400′ tumble of water at the highest of these falls was bestowed the designation of tallest vertical drop east of the Mississippi River, the tallest free-fall drop east of the Mississippi title goes to Tennessee’s Fall Creek Falls.
